THE CRACOW INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE ROUTE

THE KRAKOW INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE ROUTE

The Krakow Industrial Heritage Route is a urban tourist trail - the first of this kind in Poland. The first trail of the aforementioned route features the most valuable objects situated in the very centre of the city and its close vicinity. The trail includes 16 objects from the field of industry, transportation, power and gas production, protection against the flood and fire. All of them are marked by their exceptional historical and architectonical significance. A great number of them were erected in 19th and 20th century by the leading Polish specialists of their era such as:
T. Stryjeński, F. Mšczyński, Z. Hendel, K. Knaus, M. Moraczewski, T. Talowski, J. Zawiejski, J. Rzymkowski but some were designed, erected and technically equipped by foreign engineers from other European countries, thus making them part of greater European cultural heritage. Some of them are still in use, others were adapted to function in a different capacity, including a public one. The old tram depot which was transformed into The Museum of Municipal Engineering - is major attraction of the route and runs a tourist information office specializing in providing detailed information about the route (www.mimk.com.pl/ihr).

1. THE RAILWAY STATION.
The main station building was erected during the years 1844-1847 by architect P. Rosenbaum in the Neo-Renaissance style. It was rebuilt from 1869-1871 and again from 1892-1894 in the eclectic style seen today. The railworkers' housing located beyond the platforms was built from 1869-1925, the water tower c. 1925.

2. THE GÖTZ FAMILY BREWERY
Erected in 1840 by industrialist R. Jenny, the brewery was subsequently rebuilt and expanded. It belonged to the John family from 1853-1903, and to the Gőtz family from 1904. The complex consisted of malt-houses, brewing rooms, boiler rooms, engine rooms, storehouses, dispatching buildings and the brewery owner's mansion, preserved to this day.

3. THE RAILWAY FLYOVER (VIADUCT)
Built 1896-1898 by T. Talowski, this was the first two-level railway crossing in Krakow. The construction of the viaduct was achieved by lowering the surface of Lubicz Street, which was then embraced by the retaining walls. The metal ornamentation on the viaduct was created in the Krakow workshop of J. Gorecki.

4. THE MUNICIPAL THEATRE POWER STATION
This building was erected in 1893 by J. Zawiejski in the secessionist style. Until c. 1906 it housed the power station that generated electricity for the Municipal Theatre (at present The Slowacki Theatre).

5. THE ZIELENIEWSKI FORGE
The forge is the oldest section of the L. Zieleniewski Plant, which was built in 1851 and operated on this site until 1886. The plant produced agricultural and industrial equipment, utilising one of the first steam engines in Krakow. The factory owner's mansion, with its courtyard and garden, is an integral part of the complex.

6. THE FIRE WATCHTOWER
Built in the years 1877-1879 by M. Moraczewski in the neo-gothic style, the complex consisted of firefighters' barracks, a fire emergency department, telegraph, garages, workshops, a hose-drying room, and a gym. The front building was equipped with a water reservoir over the middle entrance gate.

7. THE RAILWAY FLYOVER (VIADUCT)
When it was first constructed, the viaduct we see today was a railway bridge over what was then the bed of the Vistula River. It was built from 1861 - 1863 by the Karl Ludwig Railway Company on the Krakow - Lvov line.

The old bed of the Vistula River was backfielld from 1878 - 1880.

8. THE RAILWAY CULVERT
Built in 1855 by the Karl Ludwig Railway Company on the Krakow-Lvov railway route, the culvert was broadened in 1899 when the Krakow - Kocmyrzów line was constructed.

9. THE CRACOW POWER STATION
Erected 1904-1905 by engineer A.W. Schleyen and architect J. Rzymkowski, it underwent many modernisations and in 1957 reached its full productiove capacity of 22 megawatts. The complex consisted of turbine rooms, boiler rooms, a control room, a switching station and transformer station. Electricity and process steam production ceaset 1984.

10. THE TRAMWAY DEPOT
Erected in 1882 and expanded until the 1930s, this complex consisted of depots for horse-drawn trams and electric narrow- and standard-gauge trams, dispatch offices, workshops, a power station, and bus garages. Since 1998 it has housed Museum of Municipal Engineering in Krakow.

11. THE CRACOW GASWORKS
Founded in 1856-1857 by the Continental Gas-Gesellschaft in Dessau, the gasworks was turned over to city ownership in 1886. It was expanded at the turn of the 20th century. Gas production ceased in 1968.

12. THE BRIDGEHEADS OF THE PODGÓRSKI BRIDGE
These are the remnants of a bridge built from 1844-1850 by T. Kutschera, the first bridge over the Vistula River in Krakow to be built with brick pillars. The bridge was dismantled in stages, ending in 1936.

13. THE PILSUDSKI BRIDGE
Designed by a team supervised by A. Pszenicki, rector of Warsaw Technical University, the bridge was constructed from 1926-1933. The 3-span steel riveted structure supporting the bridge was manufactured and assembled by Krakow's own Zieleniewski Plant.

14. THE VISTULA RIVER EMBANKMENTS
Built 1907-1912 by R. Ingarden as flood protection for Krakow and Podgórze, the segment of the Vistula River within the stretch protected by these embankments was conceived as part of the planned Danube -Dniestr canal. At first, the embankments were used to load and unload boat cargo; since the 1940s, they have gradually been transformed into boulevards.

15. THE PODGÓRZE POWER STATION
Built from 1899-1900 as the Podgórze Municipal Power Plant. The general contractor of the electrical equipment was the F. Křižik Company in Prague. In 1926 this building was transformed by J. Rzymkowski into a dormitory and bathhouse. Close-by the industrial part of the complex stands the former villa of the power station manager.

16. THE SCHINDLER FACTORY
This manufacturing-warehouse complex was built in 1937 for the "Rekord" metal goods factory. In the years 1940-1944 the plant was rented by O. Schindler, who employed Jews that otherwise faced the prospect of extermination. In 1948 the factory buildings were expanded and used as a telecommunications components plant.
