The Femcities network
The Femcities network was initiated in 1997 by Vienna as a cooperation platform for central and eastern European cities. The aim of the network is to bring cities and regions together, while developing urban equality policies and advancing women's rights at a local level. Continuous exchange of good practice and experience enables the members to develop equality projects and create more sustainable, effective solutions.
The network brings together 29 cities including: Stuttgart, Belgrade, Frankfurt, Graz, Helsinki, Leuven, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Sarajevo and Zürich.
The Femcities conference is held annually and the reports presented provide a deeper understanding of issues such as political representation of women in local government, labour situation of women during COVID, or the female dimension of migration.
Femcities is coordinated by the Vienna City Hall’s department for gender equality.
Kraków joined the network as a result of the implementation of the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life, which defines the scope of cities' commitment to supporting gender equality. The Charter also obliges signatories to take participate in international projects in the field.
Kraków's participation in the network is coordinated by Nina Gabryś Plenipotentiary of the Mayor of the City of Kraków for Equality Policy,.
Membership of the Femcities network does not require a membership fee.
