Smoczyca Przekupka – The Market Woman Dragon

Smoczyca siedzi na zydelku z koszem pełnym towaru, owinięta szalem i z chustką na głowie, bo przecież siedząc na placu targowym jest się wystawionym na różne warunki pogodowe. Smoczyca ma swoje miejsce nieopodal studni i tam czeka na klientów. Parafrazując filmowe powiedzenie znakomitej polskiej aktorki Ireny Kwiatkowskiej, która przez parę lat po wojnie mieszkała i występowała w Krakowie, jest to smoczyca, która żadnej pracy się nie boi.

Samo miejsce handlowe, czyli plac Na Stawach, swoją nazwę wywodzi od tego, że do XIX w. były tam stawy norbertańskie, w których hodowano ryby. Potem stawy zasypano, a pamięć o nich pozostała w nazwie. Miejsce to wybrukowano i od 1991 r. jest jednym z ważniejszych placów targowych w Krakowie. Można tam zrobić zakupy, a głodni i spragnieni mogą skorzystać z lokalnych barów.

Targowisko zaczynało swoją działalność od niewielkiego bazaru ekologicznego, przez kolejne lata poszerzało grono sprzedawców, a przede wszystkim klientów, wśród których nie brakuje i turystów. Handel – niezależnie od warunków pogodowych – trwa na placu przez sześć dni w tygodniu, a sprzedawcy oferują pełny zakres artykułów spożywczych, a także inne produkty. Największym zainteresowaniem cieszą się świeże owoce i warzywa, a od niedawna również towar wprost od naszej smoczycy. Niewykluczone, że dla stałych klientów będzie miała rabaty lub promocje.

The dragon, or rather dragoness, sits on a stool with a basket full of goods, wrapped in a shawl and with a kerchief on her head, because after all, sitting in the market square she is exposed to all sorts of weather conditions. The dragoness has her own place near the well and waits there for customers. To paraphrase a classic TV series tagline by the outstanding Polish actress Irena Kwiatkowska, who lived and performed in Krakow for several years after the war, this is a dragoness who “is not afraid of any job”.

The shopping area itself, Na Stawach Square [By the Ponds in Polish], derives its name from the fact that until the 19th century there were Norbertine ponds here where fish were reared. The ponds were later filled in but the memory of them remained in the name. The site was paved over and has been one of the most important market squares in Krakow since 1991. Shopping can be done there, and the hungry and thirsty can enjoy the local bars and restaurants.

The market started out as a small organic market, and over the years it has expanded its range of vendors and, above all, its customer base, among whom there is no shortage of tourists. Trading – regardless of weather conditions – goes on at the square six days a week, with vendors offering a full range of foodstuffs as well as other products. Fresh fruit and vegetables are the most popular, and recently also goods direct from our dragoness. It is not impossible that she will have discounts or promotions for regular customers.
