Pope Francis dies. He visited Kraków in 2016

On 21 April 2025, Easter Monday, Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88. In 2016, he came to Kraków for World Youth Day. He stayed in the city from July 27 to 31. It was his only pilgrimage to Poland and his first visit to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe at the beginning of his pontificate.

On April 15–16, Kraków hosted a delegation from the Ukrainian city of Sumy, which has recently suffered the devastating consequences of Russian attacks. On Palm Sunday, a missile strike on the center of Sumy resulted in the deaths of over 40 people and left another 100 seriously injured. Mayor of Kraków, Aleksander Miszalski, extended his condolences to the Consul General of Ukraine. Kraków will also be providing Sumy with humanitarian aid.

The First 6 Months of the Night Mayor and His Commission – Actions and Future Plans

In August 2024, Jacek Jordan took office as Kraków’s first and Poland’s second Night Mayor. At the same time, the Commission for Sustainable Night Economy was established under the Mayor of Kraków. It is composed of representatives of informal residents' groups, NGOs, the tourism industry, business owners, city officials, and municipal units. Acting as an advisory body, the commission presents its proposals to the Mayor in the form of resolutions, with the Night Mayor serving as its chair.
