Nánjīng, the capital of the booming Jiangsu province lies in western China, on the Jangcy river. A historical city, Nanjing constituted an important regional hub as early as in 4th century B.C. Later on the city developed into a leading economic centre of southern China famous for manufacturing excellent silk and books. For four centuries Nanjing was a capital ruled by Liang and Ming dynasties (the latter, established in Nanjing, later moved to Beijing). In 1927- 1949 the city functioned as the capital of the Republic of China established here in 1911-1912. For centuries, Nanjing has been a vibrant cultural centre famous for its literature, visual arts and music. Moreover, the city is one of China′s most significant economic hubs with well-developed electric, motor and chemical industries as well as prosperous shipyards and steelworks. Located mid-way between Beijing and Shanghai and boasting a large, international airport, the city is also an important communication hub linking northern and southern China. The Changjiang (formerly Jangtsekiang) river connects the city with East China Sea, making it the country′s largest inland harbour. Currently Nanjing is the largest Chinese university city accommodating over 110 000 students who surely enjoy the entertainment offered by the city′s multiple theaters, museums and sports facilities. The main attractions include: the city walls, Sat Yat Sen mausoleum, multiple pagodas and shrines, the Nanjing Municipal Museum and the Taiping Empire Museum.
