The exhibition Brilliance of Time. Japanese Laquerware in the Decorative Art is a unique journey into one of Japan’s most exquisite and ancient forms of craftsmanship. The exhibition showcases the wealth of the urushi tradition – natural lacquer obtained from the sap of the lacquer tree, prized for its decorative and protective qualities for over nine thousand years. The objects on view include urushibako: boxes, small vessels, and containers adorned with techniques requiring remarkable precision and patience. We present both the masterpieces of former generations and contemporary works that develop this tradition while responding to the sensibilities of today’s audience.

Visitors will encounter a wide range of decorative methods: shimmering gold maki-e, delicate mother-of-pearl inlay raden, and carved choshitsu lacquer. The exhibition also reveals the process behind lacquerware: from collecting the raw sap, through its refinement, coloring, and the preparation of substrates, to the meticulous application of multiple layers.

Combining collections from Polish museums and private collectors with works by Japanese artists and artisans, the exhibition highlights the extraordinary continuity of this craft – from ceremonial and everyday objects of the past to contemporary artistic explorations. Urushi is more than a decorative technique: it is a material that binds functionality with spirituality, daily life with ritual, and tradition with modernity. In this way, the Brilliance of Time becomes not only a presentation of beautiful objects, but also a story of culture, mastery, and profound dedication to craft.
