A legendary city founded by the famed emperor - Tsar Peter I of Russia - located in the Neva River delta at the head of the Gulf of Finland, on a territory consisting of over forty islands. Between 1721 and 1918 it was the capital of the Russian Empire. St. Petersburg is today a federal subject of the Russian Federation. It is the capital city of the north-west federal district and the Leningrad Oblast, although it does not belong to it. The city of St. Petersburg - called the northern capital or simply (informally) Pitier – is, besides Moscow, the largest business, cultural and scientific centre of Russia, whereas with regard to the number of tourist visitors it is ahead of the capital city. It is commonly recognized as one of the world's greatest urban complexes.
