Visit of the Mayor of Gaziantep
On 30 June 2022 delegation from City of Gaziantep led by Mayor Fatma Şahin met with Jacek Majchrowski Mayor of Kraków.
Ms. Şahin was accompanied by the representatives of strategic city departments and I Counselor of the Embassy of Türkiye in Warsaw Mr. Hakan Abacı. Delegation traveled to Poland to attend the World Urban Forum in Katowice. Ms. Fatma Şahin is the Chairman of the Association of the Cities of Türkiye.
It was a courtesy visit nevertheless, several topics were discussed during a meeting. Mayor Şahin underlined that from all the cities in Türkiye Gaziantep had to face the largest refugee crisis. Since the beginning of the civil war in Syria, for 10 years, 500,000 war refugees arrived to city having a population of 2 million people. Gaziantep is still struggling with the big implications of the refugee inflow.
Gaziantep is the beneficiary of the aid provided by international organisations such as United Nations Human Settlements Programme - UN Habitat, building new schools and tackling housing crises. In the most critical moment of the refugee crisis the city faced a severe water shortage.
Located in the south of Türkiye Gaziantep is the capital of Gaziantep Province where one can find an archeological site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The ancient city Zeugma was founded around 3rd century BC.
