National Day of Luxembourg

On 23 June Luxembourg celebrates official anniversary of the Grand Duke’s birth. Until the mid-19 century the actual birthday of the current sovereign was a National Day. The date of 23 June has been chosen in 1961.

Traditional celebration of the official Grand Duke’s birthday starts on 22 June. The highlight of the evening is the Fakelzuch - the torchlight procession and firework display in the capital city. The official ceremonies are organized on the  next day and they also include a visit of the Grand Duke and his family to the chosen town in Luxembourg (each year a different one).
