National Day of Norway

On 17 May Norwegians are commemorating the signing of the constitution on that date in 1814 in Eidsvoll. The document declared Norway to be an independent kingdom and constitutional monarchy. 

First official celebration of the Constitution Day was organised by the Norwegian Parliament on 17 May 1836.

Today there are no very official ceremonies with the participation of national authorities. Norwegians walk in the parades that take place across the country, they decorate cities and their homes with flags and flowers. In Oslo, the parade is greeted by the royal family who are waving to the crowds from the Royal Palace balcony.
