National Day of Brazil

In Brazil September 7 - Sete de Setembro - is not just a regular date, it is Independence Day. September 7 is a boisterous celebration in South America, but also in other countries of the world.

Brazilians’ most important holiday commemorates the date of September 7, 1822, when Prince Pedro, son of the Portuguese king, Dom João VI declared Brazil’s independence, ending Portugal’s 322-year colonial domination of this part of the world.

Nowadays, September 7 is a day of military parades and speeches in the country’s capital, Brasilia. In the evening, fireworks light up the sky over Brazilian cities. Thanks to the large Brazilian diaspora spread around the world, this national holiday has gained an international dimension.
