Support for children/families of incarcerated parents

The Probation Association of Małopolska, (Małopolskie Stowarzyszenie Probacja) with the financial support of the Kraków Municipality, implemented the Mum, dad, theatre and me („Mama, tata, teatr i ja”) programme aimed at strengthening family ties The project was implemented in two wards (female and male) of the Penitentiary Institution of Kraków Nowa Huta. The incarcerated parents took part in a series of on-line classes raising parenting skills and individual theatre classes. As part of the latter they prepared and recorded a collection of fairy tales for their children. They also staged and recorded a performance on the occasion of Children's Day and Christmas. Families and children of inmates could also benefit from community support. Since, due to the pandemic, the children have no direct contact with their incarcerated parents, this initiative enabled them to see and hear their parents, to feel special, experience their love and receive their gifts (recorded performances and handmade teddy bears).

The main objective of the task was to strengthen the bond between the incarcerated parent and the child. It also helped promote children's rights through activities within the so-called Creative Resocialisation.

Thanks to non-standard working methods (art therapy) aimed at developing the individual's creative potential, the inmates had the opportunity to participate in a new project, look at their situation from a different perspective, engage in supporting their families and convey their feelings for them. The project, developed in two stages (March to June and November to December 2020), focused on psychological support, counteracting violence and addictions in the families of  inmates.
