EUROCITIES was established in 1986 the by mayors of six large European cities: Barcelona, Birmingham, Frankfurt, Lyon, Milan and Rotterdam. This association, networking major cities from European Union member states, is systematically expanding and at the beginning of 2007 it comprised more than 130 cities from 30 countries. EUROCITIES provides a platform for its member cities to exchange experiences. The organization operates by means of committees (of Social Affairs, Culture, Economic Development and City Renovation, Environmental Protection, Transport, Technological Cooperation and the East/West Committee), each with different working groups.

Krakow submitted its application to EUROCITIES in September 1990 (Resolution of the Krakow City Council no. IV/47/90 dated 8 September 1990). By the Resolution of 9 November 1992 the Management Board of the City of Krakow confirmed Krakow's membership in EUROCITIES as an associate member. The status of a full member of the organization was granted to Krakow after the accession of Poland to the European Union. Krakow has since started to cooperate actively, in particular, with the committees of Culture, Social Affairs, Economic Development and City Renovation and the East/West Committee. Moreover, the city has access to EUROCITIES information concerning EU financial programmes.

Coordination of cooperation:

European Funds Bureau is the coordinator of Krakow's participation in EUROCITIES projects.
