About

Karol Wojtyła was employed in Solvay Soda Works as a manual worker in 1940-1944 (first in stone quarries, and later in the factory).

Thus, he could avoid being transported to Germany, a fate that awaited everyone without permanent employment. Wojtyła would frequently choose night shifts to have more time for study and prayer. His co-workers often replaced him, allowing Wojtyła to study or sleep a bit.
