Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła

ul. Klasztorna 11, Kraków

Nearly 800 years old, the abbey is home to Poland's most famous sanctuary of the Christ Crucified.

As the metropolitan bishop of Kraków, Karol Wojtyła frequently visited the abbey to pray. The proof of his close bond with the Mogiła Sanctuary was the fact that – from among many other suggested sites – he chose this one to be the place of his meetings with the faithful during the first papal trip to his homeland in 1979.

In 2008, a monument to John Paul II designed by Marek Kordyaczny was erected in the courtyard of the sanctuary.
