Church of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe

Osiedle Tysiąclecia 86, Kraków

The church was erected thanks to the persistence of Józef Kurzeja, who made efforts to build the temple for a developing housing estate in Mistrzejowice.

Cardinal Karol Wojtyła supported these attempts despite the opposition of the contemporary authorities, who wished to make Nowa Huta a secular town. In 1971, Wojtyła delivered a Midnight Mass under the open sky in the spot where the present church now stands.

He consecrated the church as a pope in 1983. Since 1991, the front of the church features a statue of the pope, created by Kazimierz Gustaw Zemła.
