About

The Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland is also called Ark of the Lord, due to its characteristic boat-like shape, designed by Wojciech Pietrzyk, who modelled it on the Corbusiera Chapel in Ronchamp. Its construction commenced in 1967 and Cardinal Karol Wojtyła consecrated the temple only in 1977. And thus, after many efforts, nearly 30 years after the commencement of the town's construction, the supposedly atheist Nowa Huta received its own church.

In the martial law (13th December 1981 – 22nd July 1983), the church held a service to the Fatherland on the 13th day of each month. After each service, demonstration would flare up against violation of civil rights by the authorities, detainment of "Solidarity" activists and repressions towards political opponents. These demonstrations were usually thwarted by force. Their most well-known victim was Bogdan Włosik, a 19-year-old student, who worked in Lenin Steelwork. Opposite the church stands a monument commemorating the place where Włosik was shot by an agent of the Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1982.
