With the Moon as a Backdrop – 9th Kraków Museum Night Date:
2012-04-23
- 2012-05-19
Free admission to all exhibitions; the chance to look in corners usually hidden from prying eyes, and a heap of attractions prepared especially for the occasion – it’s time for the annual lunar art exhibition which launches a general mobilisation: Museum Night.
As ever, a day before other cities – on Friday 18 May – the programme for night owls is being run by 24 institutions. Lovers of excursions outside Kraków will also be welcomed by the Niepołomice Museum and the Kraków Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka, while the Archaeological Museum will take them on a trip to Ojców. Although the general opening hours for the event are between 7pm-1am, do study the programme carefully, because this year there are many exceptions to the rule. Some attractions require a reservation, such as Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, the Rynek Underground, the Town Hall Tower, the Green Room of the Collegium Maius, and some excursions.
Although the full programme (guided tours, film screenings, performances, concerts, workshops, urban games, historic tram rides, or even a night bike ride) awaits in every branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, special interest is provided this year for in the Zwierzyniec House and the presentation of Lenin memorabilia which is combined with a barbecue. The National Museum in Krakow focuses on the Dawn of Modernity, an active tour of all the exhibitions providing visitors with various forms of personal expression. For the first time, the Museum is opening its branch in the former granary at Sikorski Square, where the European Cultural Centre Europeum will be housed (reservations). MOCAK will be dominated by the spirit of sport (Sport in Art exhibition; see p 46), and visitors in shell suits will be particularly welcome. For the first time, the Home Army Museum will be participating in the Night in its new location; this is an opportunity not only to get to know the exhibitions, or for kids to participate in workshops, but also to admire the new site, a beautifully converted post-Austro-Hungarian building.
From Nowa Huta, through the Old Town, to Zwierzyniec, there’s something for everyone; still, as ever, it’s best to plan your own itinerary. Getting around the city will be made easier by city transport – on 18 May from 6pm until 3am the next morning trams and buses will be free for passengers holding either a commemorative museum coin or a special free ticket to the museums (available in each institution participating in the event). From Wawel to Nowa Huta, there will also be an old-style bus running, provided by Muzeum PRL-u (the Museum of Communist Poland).
For some, the atmosphere of a fragrant May night at the end of last quarter moon will suffice, for others a cup of strong coffee will be needed, but one thing is for sure: this night, there’s no time to sleep! (Dorota Dziunikowska, ”Karnet” monthly)
